I got to know Ros through a long-term photographic project on Weststrasse in Zurich. She was my ‘key’ to the Orthodox Jewish community and opened up encounters that would have been denied to me without photography. Sometimes Ros told me about a good photo opportunity on Weststrasse: a wedding in the inner courtyard of the synagogue, for example, or the start of the Feast of Tabernacles. Since she does not live on Weststrasse, she does not appear in any of the pictures in my book of the same name. Her daughter’s Bat Mitzvah was photographed for her family album.
